The State Mortgage and Investment Bank (SMIB) is one of the most established
financial institutions in Sri Lanka.
Chairman
M P Kuragama, is a distinguished senior banker, counting over 32 years of extensive and varied experience in all areas of banking. Appointed as the Chairman of SMIB in November 2024, he brings a wealth of knowledge in leadership, strategic planning, and management to the role.
During his career, M P Kuragama has held diverse roles, showcasing his versatility and depth of expertise. He primarily served at Sampath Bank, where he was a key member of the Corporate Management Team and the bank’s Technical Advisory Team. His contributions were instrumental in shaping strategic direction of the bank, driving innovation, and ensuring operational and technology excellence that Sampath Bank takes pride in. His dedication to excellence, deep understanding of the banking sector and integrity have earned him recognition as a trusted leader committed to advancing organizational goals and fostering growth.
M P Kuragama is an associate member of the Institute of Bankers of Sri Lanka (IBSL) and an alumnus of the Harvard Business School (USA). He has attended many development programmes both in Sri Lanka and overseas, including at the prestigious National University of Singapore.
Independent Non-Executive Director
Mr. Aruna P. Ranasinghe was appointed as an Independent Non-Executive Director of State Mortgage and Investment Bank on 22nd January 2025. He brings 38 years of experience in banking and risk management, both locally and internationally. Mr. Ranasinghe holds an MBA, and several professional qualifications in banking, risk management and treasury operations.
His previous roles include senior leadership positions at Saudi British Bank, Seylan Bank PLC, Saudi Hollandi Bank, People’s Bank and ANZ Grindlays Bank. He also served as a consultant and guest auditor in Saudi Arabia.
Mr. Ranasinghe’s deep expertise in operational risk, audit, and strategic banking initiatives makes him a valuable asset to the Board. His international exposure and professional insights contribute significantly to strengthening the Bank’s governance and risk management frameworks.
Independent Non-Executive Director
Mr. Athula C. Gamage was appointed as an Independent Non-Executive Director of State Mortgage and Investment Bank on 22nd January 2025. He brings over 29 years of experience in the banking sector, specializing in retail credit, credit management, and banking operations.
He holds a BSc and an MBA from the University of Kelaniya, along with a Diploma in Credit Management from the Sri Lanka Institute of Credit Management and an Intermediate qualification from the Institute of Bankers of Sri Lanka.
Mr. Gamage’s distinguished career at National Savings Bank includes senior leadership roles such as Deputy General Manager – Credit and multiple Assistant General Manager positions across credit, recovery, and branch management. His deep expertise in credit functions and banking strategy adds significant value to the Board. With his strong background and leadership, Mr. Gamage contributes to strengthening the Bank’s credit governance and operational excellence.
Independent Non-Executive Director
Mr. Tyronne Gomis was appointed as an Independent Non-Executive Director of State Mortgage and Investment Bank on 22nd January 2025. He brings over 32 years of extensive experience in the banking sector, with deep expertise in operations, branch management, and general banking administration.
He holds an MBA from the University of London Metropolitan, UK, and a BCom from the University of Kelaniya. His professional qualifications include Diplomas in Credit Management and Management from recognized institutions.
Mr. Gomis held key leadership positions at National Savings Bank, including Deputy General Manager – Operations, Assistant General Manager – Operations, and Regional Manager – Operations. He currently serves as General Manager at MAX PBC Holdings (Pvt) Ltd.
With a solid track record in leading banking operations and strategic management, Mr. Gomis provides valuable insight and guidance to the Board, supporting the Bank’s operational efficiency and long-term growth.
Independent Non-Executive Director
Mr. Rohana Wickramasinghe was appointed as an Independent Non-Executive Director of State Mortgage and Investment Bank on 31st January 2025. He brings over 32 years of experience in finance, audit, taxation, risk management and regulatory policy formulation and supervision of Banks.
He holds a BSc (Special Degree) in Business Administration from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura and has completed renowned professional certifications such as Certified Internal Auditor (CIA, USA), Certified Financial Services Auditor (CFSA, USA), and Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA, USA). He has also completed Licentiate Examination of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka.
Mr. Wickramasinghe has held key roles at the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, including Head of the Policy Division of Bank Supervision Department, and had served as a Banking Expert at the Central Bank of Oman, contributing to regulatory and supervisory policy development. In recognition of his in-depth knowledge in international standards and practices in banking regulation and supervision, he had been accorded the opportunity to serve as a Member of the Monetary Policy and Banking Development Committee, the apex policy formulation arm of the Central Bank of Oman.
His in-depth expertise in internal auditing, banking regulations and oversight, corporate governance, risk management and financial management adds significant value to the Board’s strategic direction and risk oversight functions.
Non-Executive Director
Mr. Aruna Kurumbalapitiya is an accomplished professional in the fields of public finance, auditing, and administration, with over three decades of experience in the public sector. He holds a Master of Economics from the University of Colombo, a Bachelor of Science (Special) Degree in Public Administration, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting and Financial Management from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, along with a Higher National Diploma in Accountancy from the Technical College of Sri Lanka.
Mr. Kurumbalapitiya currently serves as the Director General of the Department of Management Audit at the Ministry of Finance, a position he has held since February 2023. He also serves on several Boards in an ex-officio capacity, including the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University, the National Science Foundation, and has previously served as a Director of NARA, Jayewardenepura Hospital, and the 1990 Suwa Seriya Foundation.
Prior to his current role, he held senior positions in public financial management, including Additional Director General of the Department of Management Audit and Director of the Department of State Accounts.
Non-Executive Director
Dr. Sanjika Perera is a veterinary professional and senior public sector administrator with over 25 years of experience in livestock development, animal health, and agricultural management. He holds a Bachelor of Veterinary Science (BVSc) from the University of Peradeniya and a Master of Science in Organizational Management from the Postgraduate Institute of Agriculture, University of Peradeniya.
Dr. Perera currently serves as the Director (Livestock Development) at the Ministry of Agriculture, where he is responsible for the national coordination of livestock development initiatives. He has previously served as Subject Matter Specialist and Deputy Director at the Department of Animal Production and Health, and as a Government Veterinary Surgeon in the Western and North Western Provinces, contributing extensively to animal health, breeding, and extension services.
He has also completed several international training programs in animal science, feed management, food safety, and livestock productivity in the Netherlands, Japan, and China, enhancing his expertise in sustainable livestock management and agricultural development.
Independent Non-Executive Director
Mr. Nishantha Weerakoon is a senior finance professional with over three decades of experience in accounting, financial management, and corporate leadership, both locally and internationally. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura. He is a Fellow Member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka, the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (UK), and the Institute of Certified Management Accountants of Sri Lanka.
Mr. Weerakoon currently serves as an Independent Non-Executive Director of Mahaweli Reach Hotels PLC.
He has previously held several key executive leadership positions, including Group Chief Financial Officer of ACL Cables PLC, Group CFO of R. C. Manubhai Group (Fiji Islands), Group Finance Director of CIC Holdings PLC, and Chief Financial Officer of Mobitel (Pvt) Ltd. Earlier in his career, he gained extensive experience in financial management through senior roles at ETA Lanka (Pvt) Ltd, Supreme Foods Co. Ltd (KSA), Nutrena (Pvt) Ltd (now CIC Feeds), Swadeshi Industrial Works PLC, and as an audit trainee at KPMG Sri Lanka.

Mr. K. M. M. Jabir is a highly successful and an accomplished finance professional with over three decades of experience in the financial services sector, encompassing finance business , credit operations and strategic leadership. He is a Fellow Member of the Institute of Bankers of Sri Lanka and a Finalist of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (UK).
Mr. Jabir has an exceptional record in driving corporate transformation and financial performance. As the Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of Janashakthi Finance PLC (formerly Orient Finance PLC), he successfully led the company’s turnaround to profitability within his first year, despite the unprecedented challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. Prior to that, he served as the Founding CEO and Executive Director of Richard Pieris Finance Ltd and held senior management positions at leading institutions such as People’s Leasing and Finance PLC, Mercantile Leasing Ltd, and Seylan Merchant Bank.
With extensive expertise in finance operations, credit management, risk and compliance, and strategic leadership, Mr. Jabir brings valuable insight, governance strength, and proven industry acumen to the Board.
Independent Non-Executive Director
Mr. Janaka Abeysinghe is an accomplished engineer and corporate leader with over three decades of experience in telecommunications, technology, and business administration. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Electronic and Telecommunications Engineering with First Class Honours from the University of Moratuwa and a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Kansas, USA. He is a Fulbright Scholar, a Chartered Engineer, a Member of the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka, and a Member of the Computer Society of Sri Lanka.
Mr. Abeysinghe served as the Group Chief Executive Officer and Chief Executive Officer of Sri Lanka Telecom PLC (SLT), leading the organization through a period of strategic transformation and digital expansion. During his extensive career at SLT, he also held several senior leadership roles, including Chief Enterprise & Wholesale Officer, General Manager, and Deputy General Manager.
He has served on the Boards of several prominent institutions, including Sri Lanka Institute of Nanotechnology (SLINTEC), Urban Investment and Hotel Development Company (Pvt) Ltd., and Lanka Number Portability Services (Guarantee) Ltd. He has also served on the Boards of Sri Lanka Telecom (Services) Ltd., and Xyntac Singapore Pte. Ltd., which are subsidiary companies of SLT.
Mr. Abeysinghe brings to the Board a wealth of experience in engineering, digital transformation, corporate governance, and strategic management.
Independent Non-Executive Director
Mr. Ananda Seneviratne is a Fellow Member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka and holds a Master of Business Administration from the University of Colombo, together with a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Administration from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura. He is a seasoned professional with more than 37 years of experience in local and international institutes. He counts over 16 years of extensive experience in the finance and leasing sectors, holding leadership roles across strategic, operational, and governance domains.
Mr. Seneviratne has contributed to the financial services industry through his leadership and governance roles as the Chairman of Finance Houses Association of Sri Lanka, Chairman of Leasing Association of Sri Lanka, Director of Credit Information Bureau of Sri Lanka. His has served as a Member of several Central-Bank Appointed Committees including the Stakeholder Engagement Committee and Advisory Committee for Centre for Banking Studies. Notably, he served as Head of the Management Panel to Nations Lanka Finance and The Finance Company PLC, appointed by the Monetary Board of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka.
Before his tenure as the Managing Director of Siyapatha Finance PLC, Mr. Seneviratne held several key leadership positions, including Director and Chief Executive Officer of Assetline Finance Ltd, the largest subsidiary of the David Pieris Group of Companies; Director of Loadstar (Pvt) Ltd; and Head of Internal Audit, Head of Financial Accounting, and Head of Procurement at Nestlé Lanka PLC.
His global exposure was further strengthened during his tenure at Nestlé, where he served as the Business Excellence Manager for the Middle East Region, overseeing operations across more than 13 countries. This international experience played a pivotal role in shaping Mr. Seneviratne into a top-tier leader with deep strategic insight and broad industry expertise.
In recognition of his distinguished service to the nation and to Sri Lanka’s financial sector, Mr. Seneviratne was honoured at the “Pradheepa Pranama” Scholarly Felicitation Ceremony, organized by the alumni of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura in March 2025. This ceremony marked a historic milestone, as it was the first-time private sector leaders, including Mr. Seneviratne, were recognized under this prestigious National Honour, underscoring the growing significance of corporate leadership in national development.
